I love this time of year, you wanna know why? I love celebrating the holiday season, starting with Halloween! Since Halloween is 7 days from today, I decided to start a countdown of posts, each day something being related to Halloween and the spooks. How fun, right?!
Today's post will be all about some fun facts about Halloween that I found interesting (I found these on the interwebs so they could be true or false or rather...trick or treat! *Corny applause*)
TOP TEN FACTS ABOUT HALLOWEEN
1. Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas.
2. Ireland is typically believed to be the birthplace of Halloween.
3. Halloween colors: The color orange symbolizes endurance, strength, and (similar to gold and brown) symbolizes the harvest and autumn. Black symbolizes death and darkness and reminds us that Halloween was once a festival that marked the boundaries between life and death.
4. Boston, MA holds the record for the most Jack O Lanterns lit at once. (Could have changed)
5. Halloween has various names including All Hallows' Eve, Witches Night, Snap-apple Night, and Summer's End.
6. Harry Houdini, one of history's mysterious men, died on Halloween night in 1926.
7. Scarecrows, one of Halloween's most popular figures, symbolize the agricultural foundation of the holiday.
8. The first record of trick-or-treating in print was 1927 in Canada.
9. Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween.
10. The word "witch" came from an Old English word wicce, meaning "wise woman". Wiccan were respected women at one point, with sabbats or meetings that were known to take place on October 31st.
11. Children are twice as likely to be killed in car/pedestrian accidents on Halloween than any other night.
